Mobile Food Banks

Mobile Food Pantries are an innovative way for food banks to better serve communities in need, enabling families unable to access traditional food banks to become reachable using their Mobile Food Pantry vehicles. Increased mobility allows food banks enhanced flexibility, speed and nutritional options — including distribution of fresh, perishable foods like meat and produce.

NMK has completed several successful projects over the past 11 years aimed at providing food assistance to communities in need.

‘Hopelink chose NMK Mobile Fabricators to create our 24’ Mobile Food Bank. NMK was very professional – meeting our stringent financial processes and the vision of our build. They were fast to pivot when challenges came up and offered creative solutions as needed. Even after the completion of our project, they remain available and respond quickly to our questions or needs. We’ll be working with them again!’

PREVIOUS NMK MOBILE FOOD BANK PROJECTS:

FRIENDS IN SERVICE TO HUMANITY FOOD BANK TRUCK:

James Fitzgerald, the Executive Director of the Vancouver, WA Food Bank came to us with the desire to buildout a vehicle that could help serve their clients in need of food support who were unable to reach the brick and mortar location. NMK assisted in the process of procuring the perfect used step van and designing out a space that would allow for the cold storage of foods prone to spoiling as well as efficient storage for meals boxes and bags. We installed an AGM battery bank to power the refrigeration, contained shelving for the boxes and a service window to meet these needs. We at NMK hope that FISH will have a long run with this new vehicle helping Vancouver families in need.

FAMILY WORKS MOBILE FOOD PANTRY:

The folks at FamilyWorks came to us hoping to expand the reach of their services improving food access in Seattle. We were excited to work with them to problem solve how best to maximize space and usability while making an aesthetically pleasing shopping experience for their families. We continued to fine tune the curbside shoppable grocery concept we have executed previously, adding hanging as well as pull out drawers for more display variety. The entire passenger side opens to welcome the customer and large refrigerated storage is completely battery powered and silent. We are thrilled with how the whole thing came together and excited to see it out on the road doing good in the community.

HOPELINK FOOD BANK TRUCK:

When Hopelink came to us they already had 5 food bank locations in Washington State, but needed a distribution vehicle to bring grocery items to more remote food deserts in Washington. NMK designed and built a 24’ step-van for them with an innovative “shop outside” concept.  With virtually the entire passenger side of the truck able to open, shoppers are able to access pull out drawers of produce and refrigerated items much as they would in a brick and mortar store setting. Frozen and refrigerated back stock is stored in two refrigerators and two freezers on the opposite interior wall, all completely battery powered with solar charging on the roof.

Hopelink’s mission is to promote self-sufficiency for all members of our community to help people make a lasting change.

COASTAL HARVEST FOOD BANK TRAILER:

Coastal Harvest is one of the first organizations in Washington State to participate in the Farm to Food Pantry Initiative. NMK helped them to do it in a big way, designing and building this unique distribution trailer.

WHOLE FOODS “MY STREET GROCERY” TRUCK:

Whole Foods hired NMK to design and build their “My Street Grocery” vehicle, a mobile grocery store selling fresh produce and natural foods in neighborhoods with insufficient access to healthy food.

OPERATION SACK LUNCH (OSL) SEATTLE:

Operation Sack Lunch serves over 1 million meals per year to children and families struggling with hunger in the Seattle area. The OSL mobile Food Truck plays a vital role in the delivery and preparation of these meals.

SNOHOMISH SCHOOL DISTRICT – KIDS CAFÉ:

Snohomish School District Kids Café offers breakfast and lunch to students year round, including summer months when school is not in session. Their mobile Food Truck allows them to deliver meals to multiple locations, providing their students in need continual access to the mobile meal program.
